Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon
Mr Akhtar is a Consultant Upper GI and Obesity Surgeon at the Salford Royal University Teaching Foundation Trust. He has been a consultant surgeon for the last 13 years. The Department of Upper GI Surgery at the Salford Royal Hospital is the Regional Centre for the Obesity Surgery and is also the leading Unit for the Oesophagogastric Cancer Surgery for the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Region.
Mr Akhtar has had most of his postgraduate surgical training in the North West of England. In pursuit of his specialist interest, in oesophago gastric diseases he has been to Japan and the United States of America. Mr Akhtar was awarded the higher degree of 'The Doctor of Medicine' by the University of Manchester in 2000.
Mr Akhtar has been doing Obesity Surgery for the last 10 years and has performed over a thousand obesity surgery procedures. This includes nearly over 500 gastric bands, 250 gastric bypass and approximately 40 sleeve Gastrectomies. His patients has had minimum problems post operatively and there has been no death as a result operation related complication.
Mr Akhtar is a laparoscopic surgeon who routinely perform laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic gall bladder surgeries and laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair. Mr Akhtar is The only Surgeon in the North West who routinely perform minimally invasive oesophagectomy operation for oesophageal cancer.
